Durga Defeats Mahishasura

Dussehra scraps, greetings

More Orkut Scraps

Today marks the celebration of Dussehra, the day after Navratri ends. Those fasting during Navratri, also fast on this day. Dussehra is regarded as the day Lord Rama triumphs over the Demon Ravana. All across India there are celebrations where statues of Ravana (as well as his son and brother) are destroyed. Here is a video from last year where Kitty made a mini Ravana for me so we could celebrate the holiday together. Of course, outside of individual homes, the festivities are much larger.

A more typical display where thousands of people gather to watch is below. It's fascinating how many fireworks they can line the inside of these statues with.

As you'll notice in the video there are multiple men dressed up. They are living representations of the characters in the story and they parade through the streets throughout the festival and act out the events on stages in their area.

  1. it is always great fun to watch ravan burning ... one of the most awaited days of my childhood

  2. I enjoyed it! I wish I could see it again this year but I'm just too busy right now and I wouldn't know where to go around here. Next year, I will plan better.
